Dutch Days Beijing 2017: Small country, big impact

Although a small country, the Netherlands has a big impact internationally. Openness, pragmatism and unifying are the characteristics of the Dutch footprint. The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands invites you to take part in our Dutch Days festival from June 8 until June 27 to discover the Dutch footprint in Beijing!

The fourth edition of Dutch Days Beijing has a packed program with a large variety of events. Included are lectures and exhibitions, but also a biking tour throughout Beijing and our Open Day. This year we also celebrate the 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and the Netherlands. In the light of this celebration, Sino-Dutch cooperation is one of the focusses of this year’s edition. Via our Dutch Days activities you can learn more about the long existing relationships and encounter the Dutch footprints in China.

Furthermore, the Dutch Days aim to bring cultural exchange, business opportunities and political engagement to a large Chinese audience. The festival is organized in many cities spread throughout China, at different times during the year. Earlier this year, the Dutch Days were hosted in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Every edition has its own theme, showcasing the diversity of strong Dutch disciplines.

Agri business drinks and reception in the context of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in China tour

Summer has arrived and so has another edition of the agri-business drinks! Dutch and Chinese companies in relevant fields have a chance to meet up or make new connections. This evening also marks the arrival of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing after having performed in Shanghai. The Rotterdam Philharmonic is a modern orchestra which ranks among Europe’s foremost orchestras. Home of the Rotterdam Philharmonic is De Doelen Concert Hall, but the orchestra can frequently be heard in other locations. They will perform in the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing which stands as the highest level of performing house in China.

Learn more about the Dutch worldwide renowned health system and related healthcare solutions. For four consecutive years, the Netherlands has been chosen as the number 1 country for its excellent healthcare system within the Euro Health Consumer Index (EHCI). The annual EHCI, developed by Health Consumer Powerhouse, serves as the independent monitoring of healthcare in 36 countries. Founder and president of Health Consumer Powerhouse Johan Hjertqvist will compare and present different healthcare systems and discuss what makes a healthcare system work.

What comes next after reaching the top? At the age of 25, Robbert van de Corput, better known as Hardwell, was crowned World’s number 1 DJ in the 2013 Top 100 DJs Poll. Dance music is one of the main cultural exports of the Netherlands today, and has grown into a multi-million euro industry. The documentary I Am Hardwell, tells the story of Hardwells career. For this documentary, he was accompanied by film director Robin Piree for two and a half years. Through the documentary we get an intimate look at the fame and pressure that comes with the title of ‘Number 1 DJ in the World’.

Rembrandt van Rijn is regarded as the most important Dutch painter of the 17th century. From June 17 until September 17 the Leiden Collection’s first international traveling exhibition of highlights will show a group of about 70 works at the National Museum of China in Beijing, and the Long Museum in Shanghai. Included in the exhibition are portraits, history paintings and genre scenes that bring to life the world of Rembrandt and his contemporaries. To celebrate the opening of this exhibition, a reception will be held at the Dutch ambassador’s residence.

Exhibition on Dutch architecture in Beijing

Dutch architects are known for their open mind, flexibility, clear lines and strong concepts. They left many footprints and buildings all throughout Beijing. This exhibition shows the buildings from different point of views, both the view of the architect as well as the users the buildings were made for. Through short clips, well-known Dutch architecture firms among which Maison H, NEXT Architects, OMA, Power House Company and Superimpose will present the footprint they left in Beijing.

An Amsterdam novelist and his wife try to come to terms with the loss of their 21-year-old son in the drama Tonio. A high-wire emotional act from Dutch Oscar-favorite Paula van der Oest based on the autobiographical novel from one of the Netherlands’s most acclaimed writers, A.F.Th. van der Heijden. Characteristics of Dutch literature include creativity and an open landscape. Dutch fiction, non-fiction and children’s literature are read and being translated worldwide. The film screening will take place at Camera Stylo, a film house combined with an arts space where people can share music and books.

The China Women’s Film Festival organizes a Design your own female superhero contest to draw public attention to female superhero characters. Cartoon illustrators worldwide are invited to design their own ‘wonder woman’. The winning design can become an important symbol in the gender equality movement. Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is also the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal number 5. This evening, we will announce the winner of the contest at the embassy and showcase other ideas that were received.

Did you know the Netherlands has a special relationship with water? 70% of the Dutch population lives below sea level. To celebrate our special relationship with water, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will transform in a true water paradise on June 24th. There will be workshops by Atelier, Thirst and the Bulk House interesting for the entire family. We will open our doors and give visitors a unique and fun insight in the importance of building a sustainable relationship with water for our common future.
